Some days are just worst than others

Jonas is at the Annex with the giver and the giver let him see the release of one twin. On the release his father will inject the baby and soon the baby will stop moving, this reminded to Jonas to the man he saw on the memory of war and he realizes that his father had just killed the baby and that release meant death. After seeing the release Jonas didn’t wanted to go back to his dwelling so he slept with the giver. That night they both made a plan to escape, but only Jonas will leave because once he leave the community all the memories will come back to the community and the giver wants to be there to help all the people when they experience things they had never felt or seen before. The plan consisted on Jonas leaving his dwelling at midnight the night before the ceremony then he will go to the Annex were he will meet with the giver and he will ask for a driver to take them to the borders of the community with all the food they will save for the last two weeks Jonas will continue his path to elsewhere alone. There was something special between the giver and Rose Mary and that was because Rose Mary was her daughter and when she applied for a release there was something different she injected he self, and all her memories came back to the community.

 

But when the moment came everything change because Jonas found out that Gabe will be released so he had to take Gabe with him. He had to leave early and take the left overs of the dwellings and left with Gabe on the front of his bicycle seeping. They sopped to rest at some bushes after going through many communities. There were planes searching for him witch had warmth detector. Each time alpine flew he transmitted memories of snow of cold to Gabe so the warmth detectors would see them. They traveled at night and slept at day it became a routine, Jonas legs became stronger but exhausted. The memories started to get weaker as they got farther , they were staying with the community, so every time it was even harder to transmit the cold memories for their survival(planes).they started traveling also on day because the planes didn’t flew any more. But now they had new fears they were running out of food. They traveled days and days and they started seeing some creatures that Jonas remembered “animals”. Soon the landscape changed it became colder (snow) and they were starving and Jonas started wondering if there was an Elsewhere and if he could save Gabe. His memories were almost gone but once in a while he could transmit some heat to Gabe. One day Jonas saw a hill he went up by feet carrying Gabe on his arms they were both very weak and cold but when they finally got t the top they found a sled and they slide down, Jonas saw the family on the holidays with the grandparents and music and he knew that that place was his elsewhere.

“So if you escape, once you are gone-and, Jonas, you know that you can never return”(155)

Poor Jonas, just imagine taking such a hard decision being only almost 13. He is just a kid and he still need to take the decision of leaving and return all the memories to the community or staying knowing that nobody will never understand him. Do you imagine having to leave your family, the giver, your friends, and the place were you had being raised? What courage does it take to make such a decision and not knowing if it Is the right one or if you are going to regret it later on. I guess sometimes we just need to risk it all and hope that what ever happens is for the best.

“He wept because he was afraid now that he couldn’t save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself.”(173)

I feel so bad for Jonas because he has the life of Gabe on his hands. How frustrated would he feel to know that Gabe is starving and freezing and he can do nothing to help? He is just a little boy  riding a bicycle to a destiny he is not even shore it exists. And the only thing that keeps him going and living is the hope that comes through Gabe’s eyes. also the  joy of knowing  he had gave Gabriel a chance to live because if he woudn't had taken him he would be already dead.

Memories are Forever

trust the memories and how they make you feel

Jonas keeps receiving painful memories such as war but these memories helps Jona’s knowledge to increase. The giver transmits his favorite memory to Jonas witch mainly consisted of “love” the love between a family, that afternoon he decides to ask his parents if they loved him but they told him to use precise language (they didn’t know the beauty of what love means). Gabe was improving he cried when he didn’t sleep with Jonas and that was because Jonas kept transmitting memories to Gabe (happy memories) but this started to  create a need of  parents and love inside Gabe. Something inside Jonas told him to stop taking the pill he wanted to feel. The community gave one day of holiday and Jonas want to see Asher, he realized that he was playing a game of war, they always used to play that but know it seemed real to Jonas. He tried to make Asher and his other fiends witch include Fiona to stop playing but they were very angry and left him behind, he felt he had lost his friends, once again Jonas felt lonely. He learned that the last receiver in training name was Rose Mary she had applied for a release after 5 weeks of training, she couldn’t handle all the lies and pain that came with the memories, so when she was released all the memories came back to the community it was a chaos people felt things they had never felt before there was pain and confusion, the giver had felt Rose Mary wasn’t the failure he was.

“Something within him, something that had gown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away.”(129)

I think this moment when Jonas decides to stop taking the pill is  very important because is when he makes his first choice. I feel he has grown up with the memories and  is starting to gain knowledge .He now feels the need to feel love and all those feeling that are banned with the pill. He is starting to realize all the things and feeling the government took away. But I also feel like he is having a very hard  time assimilating all this new and different aspects of his  world.

“Jonas knew  with certainty that he could change nothing.”(135)

Jonas said  this when he realized that he was a different person know and he will never be the same again. He had lost his friends  because they see the world differently now.  He is feeling very lonely and the idea that one day(soon) he won’t have the giver any more terrifies him because that mean that no one will understand him. I feel sorry him he will suffer too much and its not fare for him. He feels useless  because he knows that sameness is done he can’t undo it he can’t change reality.

We can see hoe Jonas is continuing to grow on this last chapters and with the memories he had continued to receive and everything starts to make sense but also millions of new questions rise. week bu week he feels more and more lonely he knows he will soon loose the giver and he will handle all by himself.we have also seeing how Jonas is able t transmit more and more memories to Gabe and we steel have no clue of why that is possible. I guess will just have to wait and see what will be the final destination for everyone.....
